In our last blog, we talked about the best way to deal with a clogged sink. This time around, we’re going top talk about a problem that often accompanies clogged sinks: smell. If there is a nasty odor wafting out of your sink, you may want to call a plumber, in order to identify the root cause of the problem, eliminate blockages, and prevent back-ups. However, in some cases, there are several steps you can take to get rid of sink stink on your own. These methods can be attempted either before you hire a professional, or after, if the stench continues to linger. Keep reading for the best 5 ways to deal with a smelly sink, and make sure to contact an experienced Rancho Cucamonga plumber from All City Plumbing, Drain Cleaning, & Rooter for all your other plumbing needs.

Top 5 Ways to Get Rid of a Smelly Stink

  1. Soap & Water: Okay, this may sound a little basic, but sometimes the most straightforward approach is actually the best one. If you have been dealing with a persistent sink smell in your kitchen or bathroom, it’s possible that the basin simply hasn’t been cleaned in awhile. Before trying anything else, just roll up your sleeves, put on some plastic gloves, and start scrubbing away the dirt and grime from the sink. If this does not work, chances are there’s something in your drain, in which case you will want to try a more advanced method such as…
  2. Baking Soda & Vinegar: Ask any experienced plumber worth their salt, and they’ll tell you baking soda a vinegar is a tried and true solution for cleaning your drains and even getting rid of minor clogs. Using one cup of each, first pour the baking soda, and then the vinegar into your sink drain. Let this mix sit for 15 minutes, waiting till it stops sizzling. After that, flush the drain out with hot water, and start enjoying your fresh-smelling sink!
  3. Ice & Borax: A less well-known but still effective method for dealing with smelly sinks is a mixture of borax and ice. What exactly is borax, you ask? This chemical compound, also known as sodium borate, is a powdery white substance which can purchased at the average grocery or retail store, and is usually used to get rid of mold, mildew, and even stains. The boric acid in the substance makes it ideal for dissolving tough, nasty clogs, and all you have to do is pour 3 tablespoons of it in your sink along with a cup or 2 of ice and then run your garbage disposal for 10 seconds.
  4. Salt & Ice: Of course, if you don’t feel like going to the store to pick up borax, you may be able to achieve similar albeit less comprehensive results with ice and salt. Once again, you will need at least 1 cup of ice, in addition to a cup of salt. Just put the salt in your sink drain, and then the ice, and then run the garbage disposal for 10 seconds.
  5. Lemons & Ice: The lemon method to cleaning your sink is similar to the above 2 methods, except that you will want to take extra precaution to make sure your lemons are completely halved and peeled before putting them down the drain. Once you have done this, using no more than 2 lemons, add a cup of ice, and run the garbage disposal for 10 seconds. It must be noted that you should never do this using whole lemons, as lemon rinds are very bad for your garbage disposal, and may mess up its performance and even create additional clogs in your sink.
